Brushing up for blue tree project

BRUSHING UP: Member of the WRSPN, Tony Glowacki, got hands on with the painting of Millicent's first 'Blue Tree.'

The national Blue Tree Project will soon have a second tree from Millicent registered on its website

members of the Wattle Range Suicide Prevention Network (WRSPN) join forces with Millicent Hospital staff and their families to paint another tree in the town.

In February last year members of the group used tins of bright blue paint to paint the trunk of a large gum tree at the Williams Road end of the Domain Parklands.

The Blue Tree Project originally started as a way to commemorate the loss of a young Australian man, Jayden Whyte, to suicide in 2018.

Painting the dead trees bright blue has seen the project flourish into a charity which helps change the way we talk about mental health.

Since 2018 there are now 1,138 trees from across the world registered with the project and the trees now hold new meaning for many.

Members of the WRSPN will be onsite to paint the fallen tree, alongside the Millicent Hospital car park, on Sunday, April 7 and invite the community to come along and help them.

Painting will get underway at 10am and a barbecue will be provided for those helping.

Blue trees are a striking visual reminder to check in on loved ones and mates who might be struggling and to promote conversation around mental health.
