Organisers of Sunday’s Phil Keatley Cup Ambrose competition were delighted to have at least 60 people register for the day.

The competition was the final one to be played at the Hatherleigh Golf Course before it is permanently closed on Sunday, June 30.

Hatherleigh Sport and Recreation Committee (HSRC) treasurer Elle Rayson said the day was a great success for the club and it was lovely to hear everyone share their memories of the course.

“It has been suggested that the competition will be continued by utilising the Beachport Course,” she said.

2024 is the seventh year since 2014 the Phil Keatley cup has been played at the course and Mr Keatley was present to both play and present the trophy.

This year’s winners were Tom Bell and Bob Jones with 26.

Second place was Jed Telfer and Jake Wight with 27 and last year’s winners, Tim Merrett and Josh Hales, came third with a score of 28.

Nearest to pin on holes five and nine were Dan Banning and Graham Loveday who both received a six pack for their efforts.

The nine hole course was built in 1976 under a Regional Employment Development through a grant secured by the then Millicent Council.

Shortly after it was completed it was handed to the HSRC to run and maintain.

Ongoing and rising maintenance costs have been adding to financial pressures and left the HSRC little choice but to close the course.
