Burgoyne seals dramatic win for Robe

There were two games of social bowls at the Robe Bowling Club last Thursday.

The two games consisted of 12 ends and the weather put on a show with sunny conditions throughout.

Vic Dawson, Terry Reidy and Errol Jennings teamed up to claim third place with a score of 43 points.

Maria Cooper, Paul Truelove and Pat Lynch were runners-up on 44 points and won the ice-cream vouchers.

The winners were Heidi Gribble, Josh Waddell and Ross Dening on 52 points and won the O’Halloran vouchers for their efforts.

The Women’s Pennant bowls on Friday saw Division 2 travel to Port MacDonnell and Division 3 travel to Millicent, but neither side came away with a victory.

Division 2 Port MacDonnell 53/6 defeated Robe 33/2.

Marilyn Sutton’s team defeated Kerry Pedlar, Pam Robinson, Helen Dawson and Judy Bermingham 34-12, while Roma Henderson’s team were defeated by Robyn Dahler, Lorraine Dening, Barb Brown and Tracey Gray by two shots in a close clash.

Division 3 Millicent claimed a comfortable win over Robe with the final score 61/8 – 30/0.

Merle Stevens’ team defeated Robe’s Carolyn McCusker, Clare deLaine, Valma Jennings and Helen Lynch by 19 shots.

Lorraine Hyland’s team proved too good for Judy Phillips, Maria Cooper, Kerrie Boyd and Bronwyn Matthew, with the final score 27-15.

Saturday’s Open Pennant was played in Robeand both teams claimed important victories.

In a dramatic encounter, the Division 1 side had to wait until the final bowl of the day in their clash with Millicent.

Dean Burgoyne stepped up for the high-stakes shot to draw in and win the game for Robe.

The final score saw Robe win 70/10 – 69/2.

Errol Jennings, Dean Woodward, Stephen Kennett and Dean Burgoyne claimed the dramatic win over Kym Stewart’s team, with the score 23-21.

Wayne Ross’s side proved too good for Robe, as they defeated Josh Waddell, David Robinson, Glenn Wright and Peter Roachock 24-30.

Pat Lynch, Peter Gregory, Harold Manton and Stephen Farrell proved to be a strong combination as they defeated Strawb Masters’ team by five.

Division 3 had a big win against Kalangadoo, with the final score 115/12 – 51/0.

Paul Truelove, Ross Dening, Ali Douglas and Jim Gray put in a dominant performance to defeat Trevor Auld’s team 43-18.

Doug Baker, Ken Smith, Jo Sykes and Gordon Brown claimed a strong win over Peter Lowe’s team, while Rob Lawrie, Peter deLaine, Mark Murphy and Adrian Bermingham defeated Marcus Pietersma’s team 32-18.

Vic Dawson, patron of the Robe Bowling Club, was a late withdrawal from the Division 2 pennant as he had hurt his leg splitting wood but was presented with his 100-year certificate after the match from Bowls SA.

A photo of him will be hung in the Robe clubrooms to commemorate his milestone and contribution to the Robe Bowling Club.

The Men’s Pairs Championships were played on Sunday in cool and wet conditions.

The first round saw Peter Roachock and Peter Gregory defeat Dean Woodward and Steve Farrell in a close one.

Errol Jennings and David Robinson were too good for Bill Cook and Josh Waddell, while Glenn Wright and Gordon Brown defeated Ian Bruce and Rob Hooper.

Burgoyne backed his impressive performance in the Open Pennant when he teamed up with Stephen Kennett to defeat Rob Lawrie and Ross Dening.

In the second round, Jennings and Robinson defeated Roachock and Gregory on the last bowl of the game, while Kennett and Burgoyne defeated Brown and Wright.

Despite the cold and wet weather in the final, there was still some impressive bowling.

Jennings and Robinson started strongly but then gave away a five on the fourth end.

They were up by four on the 10th end but could not win another end, as Burgoyne’s consistent bowling shone through as he and Kennett won the championship 15-11.
