Opening day for Mount Gambier women

THE Mount Gambier Golf Club women held their opening day last Wednesday where the winner of the Summer Salver was crowned.

Jess Parsons received the prestigious prize, which was presented by long-time patron of the club Isobel Phillips.

After a tight competition, runner-up on a count-back was the in-form Deb Sheather.

A field of 45 players contested in the opening day competition and some good scores were recorded.

The winner in Division 1 was Penne Saffin, who played off a handicap of 19 to score an impressive 43 stableford points.

She was followed by Jess Parsons, also off 19, with 39 points.

Saffin’s round consisted of pars on eight holes, scoring 42 on the first nine and 43 on the second nine for a total of 85 off-the-stick.

Parsons scored pars on seven holes with one wipe on the 14th her only misstep in an otherwise great round.

In Division 2 the winner was Mary Kentish (28 handicap) with 38 points, followed by Deb Sheather (40) on a countback from four players with 36 points.

Kentish had three points on five holes and a four-pointer on the 11th with splits of 17/21 while Sheather scored three points on six holes with splits of 15/21.

Special prizes were awarded to Lorraine Stratford for her pro-shot on the eighth hole.

Jennifer van Rijthoven won the A Grade long drive second shot and Helen Heaver claimed the B Grade long drive second shot, with the C Grade nearest-the-pin second shot taken out by Susan Ryan.

The ball rundown had 11 players rewarded, starting from Lizzie Clements with 36 points down to Jan Shanahan on 34.

On Saturday 12 intrepid women played a stableford round in hot and humid conditions.

Leeanne Hunt had a good round to top the field with 38 points, while Clements finished runner-up on 34.

Hunt scored four pars on the first nine and again on the second nine with a birdie on the 17th a highlight.

Her splits were 41/41 for a total of 82 off-the-stick.

Clements scored three pointers on three holes and two birdies on the eighth and 17th with her splits of 48/53 equating to a gross score of 101.

To cap off her day Hunt also took out the nearest-the-pin on the 16th hole.
