HATHERLEIGH was pushed to the final siren against Glencoe in Round 1 of Mid South East football on Saturday.

Last year’s runner-up claimed the win, but only after a strong final term in front of goals.

The Eagles kicked away early, with a 12-point advantage at the first break, only to see that eroded in the second term as the Murphies, now under the tutelage of coach Reece Duncan, not only reduced that margin, but opened a 17-point lead after kicking eight goals straight.

By the final break scores were tied up and the final quarter was set for a cracker.

Inaccuracy in front of goals had threatened to derail the Eagles’ day, with 16 minor scores recorded by the final break.

However, they banged on another five majors and held the Murphies to just three to run out victors.

Hatherleigh coach Tom Hutchesson was in fine form up forward, with six major scores, while Jed Telfer (3) and Jack Skeer (2) also contributed multiples.

Patrick Mitchell was in fine form for the Murphies, with five majors scores, while Isaac Mulraney (3), Dylan Childs (2) and Alex Hentschke (2) also contributed.
